The Le Bons Bay Picnic
Le Bons Bay is a tiny beach and farming community on the Banks Peninsula. Sleepy is a great way to describe it, apart from New Years Day when suddenly cars arrive from all over the Peninsula, converging on the Domain for the annual Le Bons Bay Picnic.
Starting at 1pm in the afternoon, there is time to recover from New Year parties, to gather up the family into the station wagon and head for Le Bons.
Down on the beach a sleepy seal watched the locals play and surf, oblivious to the goings on a hundred metres away at the Domain.
There is face painting, sausage sizzles, pony rides, rock tossing (I kid you not!) but the feature of the day is the races – running, egg and spoon, sack races, three legged races for young and old. All proceeds to the new Akaroa Health Hub
Events like this are worth watching out for when you travel – here is where you see the real New Zealand – families at play.
