Toilet Stop at Kawakawa
It is quiet on this mid winter day in Kawakawa. Originally famous for being the turn off to the Bay of Islands and for having a train run right down the middle of the main street.
Now it is a stop in its own right with the world famous Hundertwasser Toilets – the only building designed by Frederick in the Southern Hemisphere.
The first time I came looking for the Hundertwasser Toilets, I drove right through the town and missed them. I only found them on a slow return trip through the town, situated as they are between two very ordinary modern buildings.
These days the Hundertwasser theme has developed more strongly around the toilets – there is a beautiful mosaic arm chair, a fantastic mural, more tiled creations all around the town, shops that focus on Hundertwasser and his art, and today a new addition for me – An Art walk of Surprise – donation only and you can walk through this playful sculpture and Mosaic creation.
This is a must stop on any trip north, and I usually follow it with a coffee at the Trainspotter cafe, just across the road. A great place to watch the tourists and cameras clicking away, while you sit in the sun.
