The Big Blue house B&B
For many women visiting Auckland, The Big Blue House is the first choice – it is homely, central, and there is a great value single room for women travelling on their own. We stayed there last week and also staying were a couple from South Carolina travelling NZ. They said they always stayed in B&Bs because it was the best way to experience a country – you meet the locals, and get great local information.
Kate and Lynne are great hosts and when we arrived there was information about an art festival in Auckland, and also about a fabulous sculpture exhibution on the North Shore which we managed to squeeze into our itinerary, and may have missed altogether if they had not shared the information with us.
The house is a well known local identity and the rooms are HUGE – there is room to uppack and spread your goodies

Garnet Station Café
Better still for a girl like me who likes my morning coffee – 100 m up the road is Garnet Station Café owned by the legendary Lisa Prager & Verity George. This is clearly a local café – and we made it ours for our stay at The Big Blue House. They are strongly committed to organic wherever possible – organic milk and coffee, meat pies (they look amazing!) and even organic hotdogs! There are luscious paninis and brioches, this place is small and perfectly formed – like their cupcakes.
They have just been named one of the top 50 cafés in Auckland by Metro Magazine, and I am not surprised
