What we’re going to do down below is give you everything that you need to know as a New Zealander heading to Canada. Keep reading and you’ll be well prepared for your travels!

Are you just visiting Canada?

First up, if you’re just visiting Canada for a short period of time, things are going to be a bit easier for you. If you are going to be flying into a Canadian airport, then you’re just going to need an eTa Canada (Electronic Travel Authorization for Canada) that will give you authorization to be in the country. Make sure to get this done as soon as you can, as it’s one of the most important steps to legally travel to Canada.

If you’re going to be traveling into Canada from the United States by train, boat, or bus, then you just need to bring some travel identification documents with you, like your passport. You won’t need an eTa or a visa for this method of travel. With a New Zealand passport, you’re going to be able to stay in Canada up to 6 months without a visa as a visitor.

Or are you going to be living, working, or studying there?

If you are going to be studying, living, or working in Canada, then things are going to be a bit more tough and you’ll have more forms to get ready. You will have to speak with your Consulate General near where you live in New Zealand to get the most accurate information regarding your own case. You can also just do some searching online to see what steps you need to take if you want to study, work or live in the great country of Canada.

Criminality is something to watch out for, too.

Another thing to watch out for when you are traveling from New Zealand to Canada is whether you have a criminal or traffic conviction in New Zealand. If you do, you are going to have to go through a special assessment by the visa officers in Canada. Make sure to keep this in mind when you are visiting or trying to stay in Canada for a longer period of time.

Make sure to keep these points in mind when you are traveling to Canada from New Zealand. This might get frustrating at times, but know it’s worth it!
