Surprising my husband, two kids and even the dog, I found that spontaneity was ready and waiting as I awoke last Saturday morning instantly giving me an undeniable urge to jump straight out of bed, which I did, shouting with both fists in the air and my hair all over the place, “road trip!” – To my surprise, they were all up for it too.
That was, of course as sod’s law would have it, and before we remembered that the car was booked in for a service at the garage and wouldn’t be free for road tripping until Sunday afternoon.
Luckily my husband was feeling adventurous and suggested getting a rental for the trip, we’ve not done it before but personally, I think it made the whole trip more exciting. We ended up with a brand new car from Realistic Rental Cars’ budget range for just $25 for the whole day. Bargain!
For those of you that may be inspired to take a road trip today I thought I’d share our list of boredom busting in car activities which keep kids and adults alike engaged and entertained. Preparing small winning tokens for the kids is an added excitement and keeps the travel less boring and more enjoyable.
I spy – A truly classic game. Players take turns with the winner of the last round beginning the next. On a players turn he or she will say the sentence “I spy with my little eye something beginning with…” and the then the first letter of any chosen object that can be seen (w – window, r- roof, t -tree). The other people in the car can then shout out they’re guesses until one person gets it right. A fun additional rule is that objects must be inside/outside the car.
Eat the Alphabet – In this word memory game one person must start the game with the statement “I’m so hungry I could eat an apple” the group then take it in turns to repeat the phrase adding a word beginning with b and then c and so on. If a player can’t remember the list they are out, or the other players can help them out!
Are we there yet? – Instead of letting the little ones ask the question get them to think of as many words as they can use only letters in the phrase ‘are we there yet?’ Set a time limit such as, when we get there/the next time we stop/ or the next service station.
Yellow Sign, Blue Sign, Green Sign – Observation is key to winning this game, first one to spot 10 yellow signs, or 10 of their assigned colour wins. Players must shout “YELLOW SIGN!”, for example, while pointing at the sign.
